Subnautica 2 Biomod System & Bioscanner

The Biomod system in Subnautica 2 replaces a classic skill tree with genetic modifications that your survival character (the Pioneer) carries directly on their body. This page explains the structure of the Subnautica 2 Biomod system, all available Biomods, the route to the Bioscanner, and gives pointers on putting together a sensible loadout.

The Biomod System at a Glance

Biomods are equipped at a Biolab station and are divided into two types: active abilities with a manual trigger, and passive permanent effects. In total, 15 Biomods can be unlocked in the Early Access build — 5 active and 10 passive.

The Biolab is located in the Welcome Center. As soon as you supply the facility with power, the first four standard Biomods are available to you without having to scan anything for them. You can build your own Biolab in your base later on; it requires 3× Titanium, 1× Copper Wire and 1× Mild Acid.

:::warning Slot limit in Early Access Currently only one slot per type is active — that is, one active and one passive Biomod at the same time. The interface shows seven slots, but the additional ones are still locked. According to the roadmap, further passive slots are planned for a later update. :::

Biomod Types

Active Biomods

Active Biomods are triggered by a key press and have a cooldown. You can only have one equipped as active at any time.

Biomod Effect Unlock requirement
Dash Fast evasive burst in any direction (12 m, 5 s cooldown) Standard — no scan needed
Pathfinder Leaves a pheromone trail for navigation Standard — no scan needed
Sonic Echo Sonar pulse that marks resources in the surrounding area Scan: Collector Leviathan
Electric Discharge Electric shock (~800 V) against medium and large predators Scan: Electric Geordie
Chum Cloud Distraction for predators Scan: specific target object

Passive Biomods

Passive Biomods run permanently in the background as long as they are equipped. No input, no cooldown.

Biomod Effect Unlock requirement
Sea Skimmer Increases swimming speed near the ground or surfaces Standard — no scan needed
Oxygen Control Reduces O₂ consumption while stationary Standard — no scan needed
Bioluminescence Body glows in the dark, influences the behavior of certain creatures Scan: Sandspear + Electric Geordie
Camouflage Invisibility to predators as long as you do not move Scan: Bullethead
Water Retention Slows the rate of water loss in the body Scan: Coral Crab
Homing Sense Locating sense for active, powered bases nearby Scan: Surge Jelly + Hammerhead
Threat Sense Early warning of predators in the surrounding area Scan: specific target object
Dermal Garden Passively produces algae cubes in the inventory as a food source Scan: Needler Mango
Slow Metabolism Reduces the hunger rate Scan: Nibbler Mango
Water Secretion Adds drinkable water to the inventory every 3 minutes Scan: Water Slug

The Bioscanner

What is the Bioscanner?

The Bioscanner is an upgrade for the standard scanner and the central tool for opening up the Biomod system in full. Without it, every Biomod beyond the four starting variants stays locked. Scans you made earlier with the normal scanner do not count toward Biomod requirements — you have to scan the relevant creatures again with the Bioscanner.

Blueprint Location

The blueprint (as a degraded Bioscanner) lies in the Cicada Wreck — a wreck in the second main area of the game, about 1,800 m east of the Lifepod at the black box iso signal. The wreck can be recognized by its alien-structured surroundings and murky green water.

  1. Travel to the Cicada Wreck — bring a Repair Tool with you, otherwise you will have to turn back at sealed-off sections of the ship.
  2. Swim through the destroyed lower sections into the collapsed sub-chamber.
  3. Scan the degraded Bioscanner there with your standard scanner.
  4. Return to your base and craft the finished Bioscanner at the Modification Station.

Crafting Recipe

Bioscanner @ Modification Station
──────────────────────────────────
1× Scanner
2× Enameled Glass
3× Conduit Crystal

:::warning Power required The Modification Station only works if your base is supplied with power. Without an active power supply the Bioscanner cannot be crafted. :::

Functions of the Bioscanner

Besides unlocking Biomods, the Bioscanner can:

  • Read Axum technology that the standard scanner does not recognize (for example turbine structures in the alien ruins region)
  • Analyze creatures for specific genetic signatures
  • Complete scans for the Biometric Database

Step by Step: Biomod Progression

  1. Activate the Biolab in the Welcome Center — supply power, unlock the starting mods (Dash, Pathfinder, Sea Skimmer, Oxygen Control).
  2. Reach the second area — the Modification Station and the Cicada Wreck both lie in the second main zone.
  3. Scan the blueprint — record the degraded Bioscanner in the wreck with the normal scanner.
  4. Build the Modification Station (if you do not have one yet) — requires power at the base.
  5. Craft the Bioscanner — recipe see above.
  6. Re-scan creatures — earlier scanner scans do not count; all target species have to be recorded again with the Bioscanner.
  7. Visit the Biolab — after every successful Bioscanner scan the corresponding Biomod is unlocked in the Biolab and can be equipped right away.

Tips & Pitfalls

Selection and Rotation

  • The Biomod system is designed for adapting to the situation. Swap active and passive mods before every expedition depending on the target area.
  • Dash + Sea Skimmer is a solid standard package for open areas.
  • Pathfinder + Oxygen Control is recommended for wrecks and branching cave systems.
  • Electric Discharge + Threat Sense offers advantages on predator-rich routes.

Risky Scan Targets

:::warning Collector Leviathan (Sonic Echo) The Collector Leviathan is one of the most dangerous enemies in the game. It can grab the Pioneer with its tentacles and kill them. Recommendation: bring the Tadpole vehicle (it takes the damage instead of the player), have Dash or Camouflage equipped as active, and plan for sufficient oxygen reserves. :::

  • Scans with the standard scanner do not count toward Biomod unlocks. Anyone who scanned creatures early on has to seek them out again with the Bioscanner.
  • The Bioscanner runs on a single battery — just like the normal scanner. Always start scan expeditions with a full charge.
  • Biomods are marked in the Biolab menu with a yellow lock icon as long as they are not yet unlocked. There you also see directly which creature is required.

Prioritize Early

  • Water Secretion (Water Slug) is one of the cheapest unlocks and immediately reduces the administrative effort around your water supply.
  • Camouflage (Bullethead) makes exploring dangerous areas easier early on — keeping still is enough to avoid most attacks.
  • Slow Metabolism and Water Retention extend expeditions considerably once you are away from base for longer.
