Subnautica 2 Gameplay Basics Guide

The Subnautica 2 gameplay basics form the foundation for everything you do on the ocean moon Proteus – from your first breathing exercise in shallow water to an organized deep-sea expedition in the Tadpole submersible. This page explains the core gameplay loop and all survival mechanics, and gives you a structured start as a newcomer.

The Gameplay Loop: Explore, Survive, Craft

Subnautica 2 is built on a five-step loop that repeats and expands continuously:

  1. Explore – Seek out new biomes and environments, discover fauna and debris
  2. Scan – Record objects, technology and ruins with the scanner to unlock blueprints and PDA entries
  3. Craft – Process gathered resources at the Fabricator into tools, equipment, vehicle parts and base modules
  4. Build – Expand the base with new rooms, power infrastructure and stations
  5. Survive – Keep an eye on oxygen, food, water, health and genetic adaptations

Better equipment opens up new depth zones, whose resources in turn make better equipment possible. This cycle is the backbone of the entire progression.

Survival Mechanics in Detail

The Four Status Values

Value Consequence at 0
Health Death, respawn at the last Biobed
Oxygen Health loss (short grace period after zero)
Hunger Health loss until food is eaten
Thirst Health loss until water is drunk

In Survival mode – the recommended default mode – all four values are active. Creative mode switches off resource limits and is suited to exploring without survival pressure.

Oxygen

You start with a 45-second oxygen supply; in Survival mode oxygen is consumed at one unit per second underwater. Increasing this value is the most important early priority.

Ways to increase and instantly refill it:

  • Oxygen bubbles – Blue bubble plants on the seafloor refill your supply without having to surface
  • Air Bladder – Instant oxygen boost (+25 units) and faster ascent; craftable from Lucifer blood sacs (Lucifer-Rotsäcke) and Titanium
  • Standard Air Tank – Considerably increases maximum capacity; requires Silver
  • High Capacity Air Tank – Upgrade stage of the Standard Air Tank, no separate crafting needed
  • Rebreather – Reduces oxygen consumption at great depths

:::warning Important: no pause when opening menus Opening the inventory, log or blueprint menu does not pause the game. Oxygen and survival values keep running. For a real pause, use Esc or the corresponding controller button. :::

Food and Water

Water: Transparent blue sea creatures called Water Slugs can be collected in shallow water near the starting area and turned into drinking water at the Fabricator.

Food: At the start of the game the character is biologically incompatible with the local flora and fauna – raw or cooked sea creatures make you sick. This block is lifted by the Digestion Adaptation (also known as the "Angel Comb" plant), which is located northeast of the Lifepod. After that, creatures such as the Halfmoon or the Geordie can be cooked at the Fabricator.

  • Cooked food does not spoil
  • Nutrient Blocks in the Lifepod storage bridge the early phase before the Digestion Adaptation is unlocked

Resources and the Crafting System

Gathering Resources

Subnautica 2 replaces the random rock chunks of its predecessors with biome-specific resource nodes. Every node is visually recognizable and yields a defined resource – which makes searching for resources plannable.

The scanner has a built-in radar hologram that helps you locate scannable objects, resource nodes and creatures. The game also uses a decimal inventory system: resources are shown in fractions (for example 0.71 Titanium), which allows precise resource management.

The Fabricator

The Lifepod Fabricator is heavily limited. A base of your own with a full Fabricator should be built as soon as possible – it unlocks extended recipe categories. Procedure:

  1. Gather resources (Titanium, Quartz, Copper)
  2. Unlock the blueprint with a scanner scan
  3. Combine the materials in the Fabricator

:::warning Titanium Ingots: not craftable in the Fabricator Titanium Ingots require a Processor – a separate base module. You find the Processor blueprint by scanning the damaged Processor at the Old Habitat (~350 m north of the Lifepod). Materials: 2× Titanium + 1× Mild Acid + 1× Copper Wire. :::

Important Early-Game Crafts

Item Key materials Function
Survival Multitool Titanium (×3) Material harvesting, rudimentary defense
Scanner Titanium, Quartz, Basic Battery Blueprint unlocks, radar
Air Bladder Lucifer blood sacs, Titanium Instant oxygen, buoyancy
Standard Air Tank Silver Increased O₂ capacity
Basic Fins Fibrous Pulp, Rubber Higher swimming speed

Gameplay Basics: Base Building

The base is your operational center – storage, crafting, power supply and respawn point. The building system is free-form and not tied to a rigid module grid.

First Base Structure (Minimal Setup)

  1. Craft and place the Habitat Builder
  2. Set a Large Room as the core, attach a hatch
  3. Install Solar Panels on the roof for daytime power
  4. Set up a Fabricator and Wall Lockers inside
  5. Add a Processor for ingot production
  6. Set up a Biolab for the Biomod system
  7. Scan, build and activate a Biobed as a respawn point

Power Supply

  • Solar Panels – Simple early-phase solution, only active during the day
  • Hydroelectric Turbine – Generates power from natural ocean currents; has to be connected to the base via a Power Transmitter
  • Thermal Plant – Power generation from heat sources, relevant for deeper biomes

The current system is doubly relevant here: currents can actively pull players into other areas and at the same time be used as a power source for the base – the location of the base should take that into account.

Moonpool and Vehicles

The Moonpool is the base's vehicle dock. It is a prerequisite for building and charging the Tadpole submersible. The Moonpool acts as a modular hub that the Vehicle Fabricator and the Tadpole Dock can be attached to. Enough clearance to the seafloor has to be planned for when placing it.

The Tadpole Submersible

The Tadpole is the first and primary vehicle available in the Early Access build. It replaces swimming over longer distances and is the decisive mobility tool of the mid-game.

Unlocking and Building the Tadpole

  1. Locate and scan three Tadpole Fragments with the scanner
  2. Fragments are spread across the entire map of Proteus; the nearest one lies ~115 m south of the Lifepod
  3. Build a Moonpool at your base
  4. Dock a Vehicle Fabricator to the Moonpool
  5. Craft the Tadpole in the Vehicle Fabricator

Crafting materials: 2× Titanium Ingot, 1× Glass, 1× System Chip, 1× Power Cell

Tadpole: Properties and Limits

  • Its own oxygen supply – no breathing timer while piloting
  • Faster than any swimming speed you can reach
  • Standard crush depth: 250 m – below that the hull takes continuous damage
  • Charging via the Tadpole Dock in the Moonpool (automatic with the base powered)
  • Up to 4 upgrade modules can be plugged in at once; certain modules can be stacked

Available Chassis Types

Chassis Function
Scout Ray Chassis Increased speed and maneuverability
Haul Chassis Extra seats for teammates + expanded storage space

The Biomod System

Biomods are the character progression layer of Subnautica 2 and add a biological component to the technical crafting progression system. Genetic modifications taken from the genome of native creatures directly change the Pioneer's abilities.

Basic Principle

Biomods are divided into two types:

  • Active Biomods – Manually triggered abilities, occupy a hotbar slot, create a cooldown
  • Passive Biomods – Permanently active bonuses without input or cooldown

In the Early Access build there are 5 active and 10 passive Biomods available. At the start of the game two of each type can be equipped right away (Dash and Pathfinder active; Sea Skimmer and Oxygen Control passive).

Biolab and Biomod Slots

The Biolab is the facility for equipping and swapping Biomods. It is located in the Welcome Center near the Lifepod and first has to be activated with a Basic Battery. Alternatively, you can build your own Biolab in your base.

  • 1 active slot and 6 passive slots are available in total
  • At the beginning only one passive slot is unlocked

Unlocking New Biomods: The Bioscanner

The standard scanner is not enough to obtain new Biomods. That requires the Bioscanner – an upgrade of the scanner that is made at a Modification Station.

  • The Modification Station and the Bioscanner are mid-game content; they only become accessible after reaching the second main area
  • Building the Bioscanner requires: 1 Scanner, 2× Enameled Glass, 3× Conduit Crystals
  • Scans already made with the normal scanner do not count toward Biomod unlocks – creatures have to be scanned again with the Bioscanner
  • In the Biolab, every Biomod shows its scan requirements before it is unlocked

Available Biomods (Early Access)

Active Biomods

Biomod Effect Unlock
Dash Directional thrust, evasive maneuver Starting Biomod
Pathfinder Glowing particle trail as an orientation marker Starting Biomod
Sonic Echo Sonar pulse highlights nearby resources Scan the Collector Leviathan
Electric Discharge Electric bolt keeps attackers at a distance Scan the Electric Geordie
Chum Cloud Bait cloud distracts predators Scan Toxic Sponge + Houndgar

Passive Biomods (Selection)

Biomod Effect
Sea Skimmer Permanently increased swimming speed
Oxygen Control Reduced O₂ consumption while stationary
Bioluminescence Self-illumination; changes the behavior of certain creatures
Camouflage Invisible to predators as long as you hold still
Water Retention Higher hydration value from all liquid sources

Co-op Multiplayer

Subnautica 2 supports online co-op for up to 4 players, but is designed as a solo experience – no content requires more than one player. All main mechanics work identically in both modes.

  • Teammates can hold on to the external tabs of the Tadpole while one player pilots
  • Base building is possible cooperatively; a teammate can generally access stored supplies
  • No PvP mode available

Game Modes

Mode Special feature
Survival Full survival mechanics active; recommended default mode
Creative Unlimited resources, no survival gauges; for free exploration and building

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Following NOA immediately: The AI companion sends you early to black box signals at depths that are lethal without equipment. Craft the Multitool, Scanner, Air Bladder and Standard Air Tank first.
  • Using up your oxygen: Always dive with the surface or known oxygen bubble locations in mind. Keep the Air Bladder on your hotbar permanently.
  • Looking for Titanium Ingots in the Fabricator: The Fabricator cannot produce ingots. The Processor is needed for that.
  • Eating without the Digestion Adaptation: Without the adaptation, local food makes you sick instead of healing you.
  • Using Silver early for electronics: Silver is needed for the Standard Air Tank – the most important early investment. Only use it for other components after that.
  • Placing the base too close to the seafloor: The Moonpool needs enough clearance below it so the Tadpole can dock. Check your location choice before building.
