Subnautica 2 – Overview
Subnautica 2 is an open-world underwater survival adventure by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, released on May 14, 2026 as an Early Access title. It is the first entry in the series with native multiplayer and continues the story of the Subnautica universe on a completely new ocean planet. This wiki covers all relevant game mechanics, systems and content that are useful as a reference for AKMG members.
General Information
Story & Setting
The Alterra Corporation's colony transport CICADA unexpectedly leaves its course toward Zezura and crashes on an unknown ocean moon called Proteus. The survivors — referred to as Pioneers — have to hold their own against extreme environmental conditions, a hostile alien race (the Tailings) and a mysterious neurological illness called Masefield Syndrome. The ship AI NoA insists on continuing the original mission — and thereby drives the central plot of the game.
Gameplay Basics
The core gameplay loop of Subnautica 2 is based on the proven pillars of its predecessors: exploring, surviving and crafting. Newly added are co-op multiplayer and the Biomod system as a character progression layer. The game is primarily designed as a solo experience, yet built from the ground up with optional multiplayer.
Core Mechanics at a Glance
Co-op & Multiplayer
Subnautica 2 is the first game in the series with native multiplayer. Up to 4 players can explore together — optionally with a drop-in/drop-out system. Crossplay between PC (Steam, Epic, Windows Store) and Xbox Series X|S is fully supported.
Important co-op details:
Biomod System
The Biomod system replaces a classic skill tree system with genetic modifications that are gained by scanning alien lifeforms. There are two types:
Advanced Biomods require the Bioscanner — a mid-game tool that is crafted at a Modification Station. At the Early Access launch, 5 active and 10 passive Biomods can be unlocked.
Vehicles & Equipment
The main vehicle at the Early Access launch is the Tadpole — a compact submarine that can dock and deploy smaller sub-drones. Further vehicles and equipment will be added over the course of Early Access.
Base Building
The building system has been fundamentally reworked. Instead of rigid construction kit modules, a procedural system allows walls, corridors and windows to be drawn freely. The number of bases you can build is not limited.
Biomes & World
Proteus offers a range of biomes — from shallow, brightly lit coral areas (the Shallows) all the way to deep cave systems and the Karakorum zone with ancient alien ruins. At the Early Access launch, story chapters 1–3 are playable; further biomes and chapters will follow by update.
Creatures & Leviathans
The fauna of Proteus ranges from small scan targets such as the Water Slug up to massive leviathan-class creatures (for example the Collector Leviathan and the Shiver Leviathan). Leviathans react to movement, surroundings and other animals — no fixed patrol patterns. They are also scan targets for powerful Biomods.
Crafting & Resources
Crafting follows the familiar scheme: gather resources → scan blueprints → build items. Titanium Ingots cannot be produced in the standard Fabricator — a Processor base module is needed for that first. All crafted recipes are shared with every player in co-op.
Early Access Roadmap
Unknown Worlds is planning regular content updates during the roughly two- to three-year Early Access phase:
System Requirements
The game runs under Windows 10/11 (64-bit) and requires a DirectX 12-capable GPU. Four PC performance tiers are defined (Minimum, Recommended, Ultra, Ultra++). Steam Deck and ROG Ally are officially supported. The storage requirement is about 50 GB.
