Valheim Beginner Guide: The First Steps

This Valheim beginner guide leads through the first hours in the tenth Viking afterlife: from character creation through the first tools to the first boss. Valheim largely does without tutorials — anyone starting without prior knowledge spends the first hour clicking on stones.

As of 27 August 2026 · game version 0.221.12 Version 0.221.13 is currently only in the Public Test Branch. Valheim 1.0 releases on 9 September 2026 with the Deep North biome, plus versions for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Iron Gate has announced that 1.0 will also bring content for the existing biomes — individual details on this page may change with it. This page will be checked against the 1.0 patch notes after the release.

Character and world: two separate save files

Valheim separates character and world. A Viking created once can be taken into any world, along with equipment and skills. Anyone joining friends therefore brings their own character instead of starting from scratch there.

When creating a world, a seed can be entered. The same seed produces the same world in the same game version — handy when a group wants to start over together.

You always start at the Sacrificial Stones in the exact center of the world: seven stones around a round platform with a compass carved into it. Building is not possible within 13 meters. The raven Hugin speaks up at milestones and delivers the terse hints that Valheim offers instead of a tutorial.

The character starts with 25 health and 50 stamina.

World Modifiers: the switch hardly any guide mentions

Since the Hildir's Request update, Valheim can be configured extensively before entering a world — on the Join World screen, and on dedicated servers via the command line. For everyone who has two hours in the evening and no appetite for frustrating losses, this is probably the most important feature in the whole game.

Combat difficulty, five levels from Very Easy to Very Hard. On Very Easy the player deals 125 percent damage and takes only 50 percent.

Death penalty, six levels:

Preset Equipment Inventory Skill loss
Casual stays on the body drops 1 %
Very Easy drops drops 1 %
Easy drops drops 2.5 %
Normal drops drops 5 %
Hard drops is destroyed 7.5 %
Hardcore destroyed destroyed 100 %

On top of that come switches for the resource rate (0.5x to 3x), the frequency of raids, portal rules and passive enemies. Especially interesting for groups: player-based raids bases attacks on the progress of the individual player instead of that of the whole world — useful when not everyone is equally far along.

The first tools: what can be built without a workbench

Craftable directly in the inventory, without any station:

Item Recipe
Hammer 3 wood + 2 stone
Stone Axe 5 wood + 4 stone
Club 6 wood
Torch 1 wood + 1 resin

Wood comes from branches lying on the ground, stone from the small chunks next to them — both can be picked up without a tool. The Stone Axe only fells beech, fir and pine, not birch or oak; those need better tools later.

One hint that costs many people: the hammer opens the build menu on right click. You cannot block with the hammer in hand.

Next comes the workbench for 10 wood. It needs a roof and 70 percent coverage for crafting and repairing to work — building within its radius also works without. Repairing costs no resources, only stamina. At the workbench you make, among other things, the wood shield (10 wood, 4 resin, 4 leather scraps), the flint spear (5 wood, 10 flint, 2 leather scraps) and the bed (8 wood). Flint lies on shorelines.

Since February 2026 there are also the Early Axes, a double axe for the early game made from two axe heads and 4 wood. The heads lie in chests in abandoned houses. It already fells birch and oak — in older guides this weapon does not exist.

Food and stamina: you do not starve

A widespread misunderstanding: nobody starves in Valheim. Eating only raises maximum health and stamina as well as their regeneration. Anyone who eats nothing stays at 25 health — which makes the first Greyling dangerous.

Three different foods can be eaten at the same time. The same food only works again once it is partly digested. The buff does not expire linearly: at half of the remaining duration, 81 percent is still in effect.

For the start in the Meadows:

Food Health Stamina
Raspberries 7 20
Mushroom 15 15
Honey 8 35
Grilled Neck Tail 25 8
Cooked Boar Meat 30 10
Cooked Deer Meat 35 12

Stamina regenerates fastest when the bar is empty (12 per second) and slowest when it is full (6 per second). The practical consequence: when chopping wood it pays to recharge only about halfway and carry on, instead of waiting for full.

Important for everyone reading older guides: until September 2021 every food gave health and stamina in a fixed ratio. Since the Hearth & Home update, most foods are either health-heavy or stamina-heavy. Guides from 2021 and earlier are simply wrong on this point.

Rested: the strongest buff in the early game

Anyone sitting under a roof or by a fire gets the Rested status after 20 seconds: plus 50 percent health regeneration, plus 100 percent stamina regeneration — and plus 50 percent experience on all skills. That is the single biggest lever for progress in the whole game.

The duration is seven minutes plus one minute per comfort level. At a bare campfire that is eight minutes. In the Meadows, five comfort levels are realistically achievable with a campfire, bed and deer hide rug. A campfire costs 5 stone and 2 wood and needs no workbench — setting one up in front of a dungeon is almost always worth it.

Two traps when building: a campfire in an enclosed room builds up smoke. The Smoked status does two damage per second, and does so without an audible warning — a smoke vent is needed. And unprotected wooden parts rot down to a maximum of 50 percent durability in the rain.

A useful side effect: workbenches and campfires suppress enemy spawns within their radius.

The first dangers: what waits in the Meadows

The Meadows are by far the safest biome. Boars, Necks and Greylings are manageable at 5 to 20 health. It gets dangerous in two places: at night, when the spawn rate rises and stronger variants appear, and in Draugr villages, whose inhabitants are deadly for beginners at 40 to 50 damage per hit.

Two status effects are regularly underestimated. Wet lowers regeneration and prevents sleeping. Stagger, in turn, is your own opportunity: staggered creatures take double damage.

The jump into the Black Forest hurts. A troll has 600 health and hits for 60 to 70. Since September 2025 there are also bears there with 800 health — those are not in older bestiaries at all. Useful to know: bears flee from fire and run away when they come within three meters of a fire source. A carried torch is therefore a real means of defense. Greydwarf Brutes and Shamans, by contrast, do not fear fire.

Eikthyr: the first boss is not optional

The first boss cannot be skipped. His drops are the only route to the first pickaxe — without it nobody gets to ore.

Summoning: place two deer trophies at the Mystical Altar. Deer drop the trophy roughly half of the time. The position of the altar is revealed by a Vegvisir, a small glowing runestone.

Drops: one Eikthyr trophy and three times Hard Antler. From that the antler pickaxe (10 wood + 1 Hard Antler) is made at the workbench.

Preparation: wood shield and flint spear are enough — his attacks can be blocked well. Eat three different foods and have Rested active. Anyone who prefers to keep their distance takes the crude bow.

If the trophy is then hung on the matching sacrificial stone, that unlocks a Forsaken Power: 60 percent less stamina use while running, jumping and swimming, for five minutes, with a 20 minute cooldown. The swimming was only added with the Call to Arms update in September 2025 — older guides get this wrong too.

Dying and the tombstone: less bad than it looks

On death a tombstone appears with everything you own. It does not expire, not even on a server restart, and it stays put if you die again on the way back. The map marks the spot with a skull, which however has to be removed manually via right click.

After emptying the tombstone the Corpse Run runs for 50 seconds: heavily reduced stamina use, high resistances, ten health regeneration per second and 150 additional carrying capacity. In addition, you are protected from further skill loss for ten minutes.

The loss at the default setting: five percent of every skill level plus the entire progress toward the next level. Relevant in co-op: tombstones are accessible to everyone — teammates can recover the belongings.

Co-op: up to ten players

Valheim can be played solo, but Iron Gate explicitly recommends playing together. Servers hold ten players, in 1.0 as well.

Two routes lead there: a session started directly from the game, public or private, or the free Valheim Dedicated Server application via Steam. Since the crossplay update, cross-platform sessions get a join code; on dedicated servers the operator has to set -crossplay, and the code is generated anew on every restart. Everyone involved needs the same game version — the number is at the bottom right of the main menu.

PvP is consensual: friendly fire is enabled by each player individually in the inventory. There is no voice chat, only text — coordination needs Discord or something comparable. For practicing against each other harmlessly, nine wooden weapons have existed since September 2025.

Portals (10 Greydwarf eyes, 20 fine wood, 2 surtling cores) connect via freely chosen names that have to match exactly — capitalization included, ten characters maximum. Metal ore cannot be transported through portals by default; a World Modifier can switch off exactly that.

What older guides get wrong

Valheim has been in Early Access since February 2021 and has changed a lot. These points make old instructions unusable:

Change Since
Food split into health and stamina September 2021
Eitr as a third resource for magic December 2022
Crossplay and join codes instead of the Steam server list September 2022
World Modifiers for difficulty and death penalty August 2023
Bears and Viles as new enemies, all Forsaken Powers rebalanced September 2025
Early Axes in the early game February 2026

Anyone who wants to read up finds the background on the coming release in the report Valheim 1.0: devs summon champions as well as on the content of the last biome under Valheim Deep North: drawbridge and more revealed. Anyone who fancies a second survival game after this introduction finds a comparable guide in the survival basics for 7 Days to Die.
